Flytilla Stalls at Ben Gurion Airport: Airlines Refuse Boarding to Pro-Palestinian Protestors
Apr 18th
As many as 1500 pro-Palestinian protestors had planned to fly to Israel for the “Welcome to Palestine” campaign, which has been called the “Flytilla” by media. Israeli authorities were actively monitoring the situation, and many airlines complied with their requests to deny boarding to protestors. Police officers patrolled Ben Gurion International Airport, but there were few disturbances. Organisers had hoped the Palestinian campaign would expose Israel’s control of movement across the borders of the West Bank, but of the 130 protestors who arrived at Ben Gurion, 4 were allowed entry after signing a document stating they would not participate in demonstrations. The rest are being held as the Israeli government arranges return flights for them. Organisers reported that as many as 100 protestors made it through the airport. Many airlines, including Air France and Lufthansa, cancelled tickets as requested by Israel. They were criticised for favouring Israel, but a representative for Lufthansa explained that it was bound to comply with the immigration laws and administrative decrees of the countries it flies to.

Many “Fly-tilla” activists never arrived
Apr 17th
The pro-Palestinian “flytilla” was much smaller than planned, as many activists were banned from boarding flights to Israel on Saturday. The largest group of activists was meant to arrive from France. They were instructed to arrive at the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris at 5 am on Sunday but were stopped by security forces. More than 60 percent of the 1500 pro-Palestinian activists due to arrive in Israel to take part in a fly-in protest have received notifications from airlines that their flights were canceled. By the early afternoon, police had detained nine people for questioning, with three French nationals granted permission to enter Israel and another six people slated for deportation. Of that number, four were Frenchwomen who had arrived on a flight from Switzerland, one was a Portuguese activist who flew in from Amman with Royal Jordanian Airlines, and one was a Canadian who had travelled from America on United Airlines.
